Miser or Druken Sailor

I usually have an easy-come, easy-go attitude about money. Not exactly the attitude that most people try to cultivate in themselves or their kids and certainly not a common one among my fellow accountants. It smacks of entitled douche-bag but I highly recommend it. It's a faith that I'll be able to provide for myself and my girls, that there's more where that came from, and that money isn't that big a deal.

Since I'm not actually an entitled douche-bag, I know that it's a huge deal if you don't have enough money to take care of yourself and those you love. I've had first-hand brushes with removing things from the grocery bags at the checkout. But I'm lucky because for most of my life I've had enough for all of my needs and some wants.

Regardless of the size of my bank account, I occasionally find myself in the grips of worry. Not worry that I don't have enough but that I won't have enough. Because my scarcity problems, like most of life's problems, are almost always in the future. And wow does this scarcity mindset suck. Talk about douche-bag. When I'm in the grips of scarcity worries, my heart shrinks three sizes, I develop a hunch, and I spend all my time counting my coins in a dark room.

From my personal and professional experience, a conviction of abundance generally leads to more actual abundance and definitely makes a person more enjoyable to be around. In my life, my financial faith has led me to take a shot at career changes, make that riskier investment, and stretch a little to build the bigger house. And (brace yourself, this is woo-woo) you find what you look for. I look for abundance and I usually find it (my track record of investing in the stock market not withstanding).

Recently, I've had a scarcity worries. Perhaps triggered by my relatively new status of single-mom along with contemplating a shift in my career that means temporarily letting go of my steady paycheque. I want to shake it off before the hunch becomes permanent. I want to find that sweet spot between miser and drunken sailor.
