An Abrupt End

Today, Dave should have turned 60. Instead, he is forever 58.

For his 40th, I bought him a bright yellow Porsche Carrera, which represented our entire net worth, and threw him a big house party. For his 50th, a trip of a lifetime in Maui with the family, indulging in cabana's at the Grand Wailea and a mind-blowing birthday dinner at Spago. Those celebrations seemed a bit too extravagant at the time. Now? Not extravagant enough.

Dave crammed a lot of living into 58 years. He was a self-made business success, from trailer park to CEO. He nurtured life-long friendships. Father 5 times over. Formidable athlete. Enthusiastic dancer. Stalwart Flames fan. He loved Hawaii, riding motorcycle in California, good tequila, and his sandwich press. When he bought that sandwich press I questioned him. How much will you use that thing? I ate my words as he blissfully ate panini after panini.

We were chatting over what would be his last breakfast. He wanted us to take more romantic getaways - a habit we had gotten away from after Covid. I assured him that we would have decades of travel together after our girls were launched. Just a few more years. I ate my words.

Babe, thank you for showing us how to really live. For always choosing to take the trip, order the good bottle, get the puppy, and celebrate the birthday. Tonight, the girls and I are celebrating your birthday at one of your favourite restaurants. You are sorely missed and deeply loved.
